When the local office of global firm Novelis contacted SVFD Fire Marshal Greg Rogers last year to ask about getting involved in a community service project, Rogers jumped at the chance to establish a partnership to support SVFD’s community smoke alarm program.

Novelis Team at Smoke Alarm Blitz

Eight Novelis volunteers teamed up with SVFD employees to perform “mini-blitz” Home Fire Safety Visits in two mobile home parks during the evening hours of August 22. The teams successfully gained entry 80 percent of the time, resulting in 232 new smoke alarms in 96 homes!

Novelis was looking for an opportunity to make an impact and difference in their local community as well as give employees the opportunity to volunteer. They quickly jumped on board, bringing SVFD personnel in to their offices to train their employee volunteers to perform Home Fire Safety Visits. Additionally, Novelis has so far donated $5,000 toward the purchase of smoke alarms with the intent of continuing to fund the program into the future. Novelis volunteers have participated in several “blitz” Home Fire Safety Visit events and have thus far contributed over 100 volunteer hours to SVFD’s program, helping to install more than 500 alarms in 187 homes.

“Our partnership with Novelis has created an opportunity to make our smoke alarm program a sustainable program, thanks to their financial support,” explained Rogers. “SVFD will be able to continue to install well over 1,000 smoke alarms every year as well as conduct the smoke alarm “blitz” canvasing of neighborhoods with Novelis volunteers. This is a tremendous partnership that grew from Novelis looking for a way to make an impact in their community.”

SVFD continues to seek business partners to support the smoke alarm program and help ensure increased fire safety in our community.
