Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) has hired 14 new Firefighters.  The SVFD new recruits began their Fire Academy this week Monday, August 3.  Five of the recruits will graduate from the Fire Academy in September.  Nine recruits will go to North Bend for additional training that will continue through December.

We are very excited to have these new Firefighters here at the Spokane Valley Fire Department, said Fire Chief, Bryan Collins.  “The energy of these new recruits to learn and grow in their knowledge is always motivating for everyone.”

Fifteen hundred pages of material will be covered during the rigorous academy as well as hands-on training on equipment and procedures.  Recruits will be tested regularly throughout their training for textbook knowledge, apparatus knowledge, physical fitness, and firefighting skill level.

Training will include:

  • Ladder confidence and familiarity
  • Hose handling
  • Health and fitness education
  • Wildland fire fighting
  • Forcible entry
  • EMS
  • Fire behavior
  • Search and victim removal
  • Fire and Life Safety
  • Hazardous materials training
  • Vehicle extrication
  • And more

All recruits will have to pass exams throughout the training on skills learned.  After graduation, crews will be rotated through different station assignments and will be on probation for 1 year.

SVFD wants to welcome these new recruits and wish them a very successful Fire Academy.
